PFUJ seek apology from MQM on forceful closure of news channels in Karachi News channel went off air for more than six hours Transmissions of all the leading News Channels went off air in Karachi after cable operators received mysterious threats over phone. They were asked to shut down the transmission of certain News channels or ready for dire consequences. They argued that book launching ceremony of MQM leader was not given due coverage. Under the pressure from political party Muthida Quami Movement, all major news channels remained off air for more than six hours in Karachi on Friday evening. Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has condemned the forceful closure of all News channels in provincial metropolis. President PFUJ Afzal Butt and Secretary General Khurshid Abbasi have given a deadline of 24 hours to MQM to extend unconditional apology to journalists and media houses over provocative threats by MQM workers to cable operators to suspend the transmission without any reason. They have asked MQM leaders to assure media that party will not intimidate media in future. PFUJ will launch a countrywide protest against MQM if party failed to assure journalists and media community to avert such antagonism. Journalists will stage boycott of MQM functions and events till MQM’s apology and assurance. PFUJ has also asked government to provide protection to journalists, media workers, media houses and cable operators to ensure freedom of expression in country. News Item by Express Tribune
