PGLU EMPLOYEE SHINES IN A REGIONAL COMPETITION FOR PWD’s By: Kristine Almira Bonuan Provincial Information and Tourism Office People with Disabilities’ actions are limited but their optimism to excel in their chosen field is limitless. Jerome Marzan, an employee of the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) shines in the recent Kakayahan 2014: Regional Skills Competition for Persons with Disability (PWDs) at the People’s Astrodome, Dagupan City last August 13. This is the first time that stakeholders of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD); Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG); Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA); Department of Trade and Industry (DTI); Department of Education (DepEd); Department of Health (DOH) and the different Local Government Units (LGUs) in the region conducted a skills competitions for PWDs in celebration of this year’s 36th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Month. It has several categories and the Province of La Union has entries for three of these categories which are the Cooking, Painting and Webpage Creation Categories. The purpose of the competition is to displays the skills and competencies of PWD’s regardless of their handicaps as they live a normal life such as participating in competitions and even working in government offices. Joseph Marzan, an employee of the PGLU is a living proof of excellence as he shone in the competition for the Webpage Creation Category. This also affirms PGLU’s commitment to care for PWDs and encourage them for improvement. Meanwhile, Bryan Jacla from Agoo and Louie Aranja from Bangar settled with consolation prizes under the Cooking and Painting Categories, respectively. Marzan, Jacla and Aranja, all bearing handicaps continued to strive for excellence and choose not to place “DIS” in their ability but choose to be able instead.
