PH CONSULATE GENERAL MARKS KALAYAAN 2014 WITH RE-ENACTMENT OF HISTORICAL EVENTS 16 June 2014 - Close to 180 guests, including high-ranking officials from the Hawaii State Government, US Pacific Command, members of the Consular Corps, leaders of the Filipino community and Filipino-American World War II veterans, witnessed a re-enactment of the historical events leading to the proclamation of Philippine Independence during the commemoration of the 116th anniversary of Philippine Independence at the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu on June12. The re-enactment play, which showed the onset of Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule, the sewing of the first Philippine flag, and the proclamation of Philippine independence in Kawit, Cavite on 12 June 1898, served as the highlight of the celebration. The Independence Day program started with a celebration of the Holy Mass officiated by Fr. Francisco delos Reyes, followed by the re-enactment play; the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and raising of the Philippine flag; and the reading of the messages of President Benigno S. Aquino III, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario. Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie and State Adjutant Major General Darryll Wong also announced plans for the Hawaii National Guard and Guam National Guard to participate by the end of June 2014 in an Engineering Civic Action Project (ENCAP) in Tacloban City to rebuild the Marasbaras National High School which was damaged by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. In response, Consul and Acting Head of the Consulate General Roberto T. Bernardo remarked, “On behalf of the Philippine government we thank you very much for the tremendous outpouring of support from the US. government, Hawaii and all over the world. Mabuhay!.” The program culminated with the community’s moving rendition of the song “Bayan Ko” followed by the release of 21 white doves into the sky, symbolizing freedom, peace and, unity. Attendees and guests also partook of the Filipino style brunch prepared by the Consulate for the occasion. END
