PHD SCHOLARSHIP - MODERN CHINESE INTELLECTUAL HISTORY Deadline: 27 February 2015 OVERVIEW: This PhD dissertation will be part of a large research project – Missing Narratives of Modern Chinese Intellectual History: Modernity and Writings on Art, 1900-1930. The project examines how Chinese intellectuals and artists undertook modernisation of the concept and practice of art as part of China’s quest for modernity. The candidate will work on his/her own choice of topic within the broader parameters of the main research project with findings complementary to the understanding of the historical process of China’s art modernisation in the first half of the twentieth century. ELIGIBILITY: The successful applicant will have an undergraduate honours or Master’s-level qualification in a related discipline with native or near-native competence in Chinese and English. A working knowledge of French and/or Japanese would also be beneficial. Applications are welcome from New Zealand and overseas students. Students whose first language is not English should ensure prior to applying that they have met Victoria University of Wellington’s English language requirements, as listed below: + TOEFL 575 with (preferably) a TWE of 5, or 237 on the computer-based test; or 90 on the internet-based test with a minimum of 20 in writing; or + IELTS overall band of 6.5, no sub-score below 6; or + CAE grade B; or + a minimum of two ratings of 5 and two ratings of 4 in the Victoria University English Proficiency Programme test. VALUE: The Scholarship will provide a stipend to cover living expenses of NZ$25,000 pa, as well as tuition fees (students will be responsible for payment of the student levy and international insurance if applicable).
