PHILIPPI - Two men were arrested Thursday as part of an investigation into home invasions in Barbour County, police said. Austin Lynn Bennett, 25, of Philippi, was charged with transferring and receiving stolen property, a misdemeanor. Jerry Lee Bennett, 25, of Belington, also was charged with a misdemeanor count of transferring and receiving stolen property. These two arrests are part of the Sheriffs Departments ongoing investigations into numerous home invasions and thefts into the county, a Barbour County Sheriffs Department press release states. Residents are encouraged to report all suspicious activity to 911 or local law enforcement. We strongly encourage you to make these reports directly to the officer or agency, rather than social media, to facilitate arrests in these crimes, rather than tipping off the criminals or hindering law enforcement efforts, the release reads. The criminal complaint states items stolen from a barn in Philippi - including a bumper, a stainless grill and a fireplace insert - were later found at Sugar Creek Salvage. Police learned the sales ticket was signed by Austin Bennett. Video surveillance footage showed Jerry Bennett was present when the items were sold, and police learned the two drove to the salvage yard in a pickup truck registered to Jerry Bennett, the complaint states.
