PHILOSOPHY COLLOQUIUM FRIDAY Friday November 22 in Mackinac Hall BL-L110 at 3:00PM David Vessey (GVSU Philosophy) will be giving a talk entitled: The History of Philosophy vs The History of Ideas Abstract: Half the GVSU philosophy major consists of courses in the history of philosophy. So what is the relationship between working on the history of philosophy and doing philosophy? Daniel Garber, Bernard Williams, Jonathan Bennett, and Richard Rorty all agree that you can either focus on rational reconstruction, and sacrifice historical accuracy, or on historical reconstruction, and sacrifice contemporary relevance. David will argue there is another possibility—that a properly philosophical approach to the history of philosophy provides both an understanding of the texts and shows their contemporary relevance. This talk will be aimed at students as well as faculty. All colloquia will be on Fridays in Mackinac Hall (MAK) BLL-110 from 3:00-4:30 pm (unless otherwise noted) Contact Professor Andrew Spear (spearaATgvsu.edu) with any questions.
