PHILS CHORTLING ARCHIVE (12) - B.A. ROBERTSON -- KOOL IN THE KAFTAN - If only to prove that novelty records werent dead, there were a few hits in the 80s, some of which were spinoffs from tv programmes ( The Young Ones or Tiswas) or comedians giving it a go (Alexi Sayles Ullo John Got A New Motor), and more excellent parodies - more of Weird Al Yankovic to come. One exception, which was actually released by a recognised musician, was Kool In The Kaftan, and its always stuck in my brain as a half decent song. BA Robertson had been recording since the early 70s with little success, until a hit single Bang Bang in 1979, started a run of 4 hits. Thereafter he mainly wrote for others, but this one song has some nicely barbed observations, and deserves its place for mocking the fickleness of followers of fashion, who jump to the next bandwagon with consumate ease. https://youtube/watch?v=HZHLpPHSTkw
