PHILS CHORTLING ARCHIVE (13) - JOHN OTWAY -- HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN - Mr Otway is such a lovable buffoon, and true entertainer, I find it difficult to believe that some people cant see the humour in the man and his music. Yet that is the case; so for the rest of us Ive picked out a personal favourite, and that was the easy bit. There are several YouTube examples to pick from, and it came down to just two - the live B side official version with full band, well organised (for Otway anyway), and quite triumphant, which is a real treat to watch; or the solo effort in a room in a club. This is far more intimate and dangerous, as you have the sense that anything could go wrong, and he would enjoy that. After all, John Otway has built a career on being the worlds greatest failure. The only time I saw him was in a room above a pub, in Bath, on his own, and he did this number, with the same help from his loyal fans as he always gets; so the second version wins, and Ill always join in and enjoy it.
