PHILS CHORTLING ARCHIVE (14) - HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT -- RUNNING ORDER SQUABBLE FEST. - Many people will remember HMHB from their early efforts, beginning with the Trumpton Riots EP and singles such as Dickie Davies Eyes, but not only are they still going strong, but their material rarely disappoints. The strength lies in the songwriting, which although quirky in the extreme, bounces between sharp or witty observations and surreal streams of consciousness. The latter sometimes require several listens before any sort of logic is apparent, or if it isnt, it doesnt matter anyway. The former are, by their nature, more immediate, but no less admirable for that. The band dont gig that often, and theres a fair amount of mystery surrounding them, maybe because of this. One fact is certain. They are firmly part of Tranmere Rovers folklore, because as committed supporters (most of us should be committed), they famously turned down a live gig on the 80s tv programme The Tube, because Rovers had a home game that night. How wonderful was that! Real fans! Picking something from 14 albums isnt too easy, but this isnt a bad introduction - from the1993 LP This Leaden Pall. https://youtube/watch?v=cNUs1rWXpqw
