PHILS PSYCHEDELIC ARCHIVE (11) Moby Grape were one of those - TopicsExpress

PHILS PSYCHEDELIC ARCHIVE (11) Moby Grape were one of those bands which seemed to fall between categories. Certainly their first album showed a fledgling West Coast rock band, but alongside some entertaining psychedelic offerings. Even the quite gentle very short ballad Naked If You Want To involved lyrics that were pure hippy sentiments, such as can I buy that amplifier, I have no money now, but Ill pay you before I die. Either their record company didnt know how to market them, or were all completely off their heads, or both, of course, as the publicity gimmick to promote the album was to release all the tracks simultaneously as singles. Additionally, I seem to remember, neither the album sleeve nor the vinyl gave any clue as to whether it was mono or stereo; you had to play it to find out! John Poole may be able to verify that last one, as I first heard it at one of our record sessions at his place. They were a band who were highly regarded by other musicians, including Jeff Lynne, which resulted in The Move playing their songs in their own sets. Hey Grandma features on the much sought after EP Something Else From The Move, recorded live. This little gem, however, is my favourite from that first album (and it was a single!), and this how you rock in a psychedelic way! youtube/watch?v=c_FlNwQlBmU
