PHILS PSYCHEDELIC ARCHIVE (18) The Incredible String Band. Im never sure if this band were the psychedelic edge of folk or the folk side of psychedelia. They have that effect on me. While mightily impressed with their 5000 Layers Of The Spirit Of The Onion album, their follow up The Hangmans Beautiful Daughter was superb. When I moved to London in 71, I managed to see them in concert at both the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Fairfield Hall, Croydon. By then, Rose and Liquorice were part of the band, and it worked a treat. A short time into my studio career, I was an assistant on the very first gig of The Island Mobile, recording ISB live in Oxford. I think Frank Owen was engineering, either Jo or Ciao (spelling?) in charge of maintenance, and Ray Doyle (as usual) was driving the truck, as well as helping wherever possible. I dont remember much about the gig, but the theatre had a revolving stage, and as roadies will be roadies, they decided that the quickest way to break down the set up was to drive the stage as fast as possible and slide the equipement off the edge! Bedlam. The drive back to London in thick freezing fog was tame in comparison. One night in the 70s, I decided to listen to the whole album and I just happened to be very, very stoned..................indeed. By the end of the first track I was convinced that this was ISBs interpretation of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and listened to the rest with that perspective. I was still convinced by the end. Good job I wasnt tripping then.........Mike Heron was really a giant porpoise wearing a wig........no, stop right there. So, this is that first track, and if it reminds you of anything else, keep quiet, I dont want to know. https://youtube/watch?v=KCcmgUpkabM
