PHL CONSULATE GENERAL IN HONOLULU ATTENDS AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND ARMY CORPS (ANZAC) DAY 2014 30 April 2014 - The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu attended the 2014 commemoration ceremony of ANZAC (Australia & New Zealand Army Corps) Day at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl, Honolulu on April 25. April 25 marks the 99th Anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – the ANZACs. It is the day to remember and pay tribute to all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions around the world. Although the Gallipoli Campaign failed its military objectives and almost 11,000 soldiers lost their lives, the valor and heroic sacrifice of these troops became legendary. The men who fought during the War became known as the ANZACs. The first commemorative ceremonies were held a year later in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and observed every year since. ANZAC Day soon became a national day of commemoration for the 61,000 Australian and 18,000 New Zealanders who died during the First World War. ANZAC Day has been observed annually in Honolulu since 1973. The U.S. Marines march and Post the Colors during the commemoration. Major General Rick Burr, Deputy Commanding General, Operations, U.S Army Pacific, delivered the commemorative address. Members of the Consular Corps of Hawaii laid wreaths, as well as special guests, Mayor Kirk Caldwell and U.S. Senator Colleen Hanabusa. END
