PHL EMBASSY IN ABUJA CELEBRATES 47TH ASEAN ANNIVERSARY 13 August 2014 - In celebration of the 47th anniversary of the foundation of ASEAN, the Philippine Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria hosted the ASEAN flag raising ceremony attended by all Ambassadors of the five ASEAN missions present in Abuja, together with the entire ASEAN embassies’ officers and staff and their families, marking the start of the two-day ASEAN Day celebration in Nigeria on August 8 at the Philippine Embassy grounds. The flag raising ceremony accompanied by the playing of the ASEAN anthem brought a total of 70 ASEAN diplomats and their families in what is hailed as the year’s first gathering of ASEAN community in Abuja. After brief remarks by Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria Alex Lamadrid, the chair of the ASEAN Committee in Abuja (ACA) Thai Ambassador Chailert Limsomboon welcomed the guests to the ASEAN day celebration and highlighted the significance of ASEAN and the envisioned ASEAN Community by 2015. The Thai ambassador likewise thanked the Philippine Embassy for the excellent preparation and hosting of the ceremony. The flag raising ceremony was immediately followed by the cake cutting ceremony and a feast of Filipino breakfast to the delight of all the guests from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. The next day saw all the ASEAN missions in Abuja in their sportswear as everybody took part in the friendly non-competitive games at the Indonesian Defense Attaché Plot in Wuse II, Abuja. Games of table tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton and futsal kept the ASEAN spirit alive and reinforced the camaraderie of the ACA. The ASEAN heads of post also took the opportunity to introduce new addition to their respective diplomatic staff and send off departing ASEAN diplomats.
