PHL EMBASSY IN LEBANON HOLDS TRAINING ON PROVIDING PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT TO MIGRANTS 09 January 2015 - In line with the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Gender and Development (GAD) Program and its continuous effort to equip and train its personnel in providing prompt and effective service to Filipino migrants, the Philippine Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon held a whole-day “Gender and Development Training in Providing Psychosocial Support for Migrants” at the InterContinental Mzaar Hotel in Faraya, North Lebanon last 13 December 2014. The psychosocial training was held with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Beirut, which facilitated the training. IOM Psychosocial Program Manager Amal Ataya, IOM Psychosocial Program Coordinator Roula Souheil, and IOM Action to Protect and Assist the Vulnerable and Exploited Migrant Workers in the Middle East and North Africa (PAVE) Project Officer Dima Haddad served as resource persons for the training. The officers and staff of the Embassy, Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) actively participated in the training. In her welcome remarks, Philippine Ambassador to Lebanon Leah M. Basinang-Ruiz noted that the training aimed to deepen understanding of the migrant’s psychological situation in relation to their social environment to enable Embassy personnel to have a more sensitive, holistic and comprehensive approach in their handling cases of distressed Filipino migrants. She expressed the Embassy’s deep appreciation to the IOM trainers for sharing their knowledge, experience and expertise in providing psychosocial support to migrants. The participants engaged in group activities and discussions on psychosocial concepts, interventions, psychosocial aggravations in vulnerable migration, psychosocial reactions and alerting signs and psychosocial first aid, as well as exercises on how frontliners are able to de-stress themselves periodically.
