PHL TEAMS BECOME RISING STARS AT RUGBY LEAGUE COMPETITION IN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA 12 February 2014 - Two Filipino-Australian teams namely, the Philippine Airlines (PAL) Tamaraws National Side and PAL Philippines National Development Red, wowed audiences at the International Rugby League Nines on February 01 when they won all their games and topped their respective pools. The PAL Philippine Tamaraws National Side defeated teams Canada, Niue Development and Greece in Pool G, while the PAL Philippines National Development Red defeated teams Japan, Latin Heat, Portugal in Pool H. Two additional Filipino-Australian teams participated for the first time in the competition, showing their determination and fighting spirit despite being pitted against more experienced teams. The Philippine National Rugby League (PNRL) has come a long way since its inception, having grown from 15 players and one team in 2012 to 60 players and four teams this year, with Filipino-Australian players coming from New South Wales (Sydney, Newcastle and Central Coast), Queensland (Brisbane, Townsville, Gold Coast) and the Northern Territory (Darwin), and even from New Zealand (Auckland). The PAL Philippine Tamarawswonthe Rugby League Asian Cup Championship held in Bangkok and in Subic, respectively, in 2012 and 2013. The PNRL is also working with the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) and other institutions to promote Rugby League in the Philippines and to help the country graduate from being an observer member to full member of both the Asia-Pacific Rugby League Confederation (APRLC) and the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF). The PNRL has been active in promoting the sport within the Filipino community in New South Wales. The team members have also taken part in various fund-raising efforts for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Consul Marford Angeles, Administrative Officer Jose Jacinto Morales and Consular Assistant Russel Villegas of the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney joined Filipino community members in cheering for the Philippine teams at the tournament on February 01. Consul Angeles congratulated PNRL Coaches Clayton Watene and Mark de Ubago, PNRL Secretary Erick Elefante, PNRL Board Member Brett Prado, PAL Philippine Tamaraws Team Captain Luke Srama and all the team members on their achievements. He also commended the families and friends of the team members for dedicating their time and effort to encourage and support the players through the grueling competitions. END
