PHONE SCAMS – WHAT TO DO Phone scams continue to be a problem here in Shoreline and throughout the country. Usually a caller identifies themselves as an IRS agent, Public Utility Employee or County/City employee. They will tell the victim they owe taxes, have unpaid utility bills or have a warrant for their arrest for fail to appear for jury duty or some other violation. They will then usually instruct the victim to either purchase a prepaid credit card or Green Dot Card and give them the number off the card. These are all scams. No public agency will call you and threaten to curtail your utility or threaten to send the police to arrest you if you don’t pay over the phone. If you receive calls such as this HANG UP. Do not engage the caller. You should report such scams to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and if concerned call the utility, IRS or named agency and check the validity of the story.
