PHOTO-SHOOT of 7 young Karrimojong girls from Nakaperimuru - Karamoja - Norhthern Uganda. Nakaperimuru is Eastern Africa’s largest resettlement village with over 55,000 inhabitants living in dire poverty. Average monthly income per family is less than 15 US$. None of these girls have ever been to school, neither can they write their name of even sign... few hours of training to do the cat-walk was their first ever formal training in their lives. After the make-up and dressing they almost collapsed and literally screamed when they looked at themselves in the mirror. It was such a bounty and privilege to be able to work with such wonderful souls despite our language barriers. Such a cruel world we live in... Back home none of these girls use soap, since its a luxury... they use mud. I still remember the open building in Nakaperimuru built by UNICEF... its current situation can be portrayed like this - In the morning it is a school where the kids learn sitting on the ground; in the evening its a pub where men sit around buckets and clay pots and sip their local brew; at night it is a stable where the cows and goats sleep. I still remember the mixed smell of urine, dung and brew. The photo-shoot was part of a larger cultural program of about 60 Youth from Karamoja visiting Kampala to participate in the program Colors of Karamoja under IOM Ugandas Karamoja Food Security and Community Stabilization Program in 2011.
