PHYS.ORG 30 July 2014 Classic Lewis Carroll character inspires new ecological model In our current day, we have seen and accepted that change is constant and the only way to survive is beating the competition. Collaborators from the University of Illinois and NUS have been inspired by this concept, introduced in the 1970s, which found its roots in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass character, Red Queen. With the incorporation of this concept into their mean field model for competition, they have improved a fundamental ecology model called neutral biodiversity theory, which does not account for competition between different species, thus suggesting all species to be considered selectively equal. This model also relies on random chance, which is not very practical and does not stand when we relate species growth to changes in communities and species over time. The improved model does not take an extreme stand and deny the neutral model but creates a more realistic model that incorporates species difference by taking a step down that spectrum. Read more on this improved ecological model in the article linked below. phys.org/news/2014-07-classic-lewis-carroll-character-ecological.html
