PICASSO EXHIBITION IS WORK OF ART AT SURREY GALLERY An exhibition of works produced by one of the most prolific artists of the 20th Century will be on display in Surrey this May. Picasso’s Important Works on Paper collection is being exhibited at Forest Gallery in Guildford from 10th May till 31st May. Joni Clifford, Forest Gallery’s manager, said: “Often cited as having shaped twentieth-century art like no other, his work has become so influential and so popular that Picasso has almost become ubiquitous in art and its history. For this reason, it may seem surprising that an important part of his artistic oeuvre, his graphic works on paper, are so often overlooked. Comprising of lithographs, lino-cuts and etchings, Important Works on Paper will provide a unique insight into the poster art of Picasso.” This historic collection of works on paper is divided into four categories. The first, are some of Picasso’s earliest poster works,made during his time spent in the south eastern French coastal town of Vallauris in the 1940s and 1950s. The second part consists of Picasso’s exhibition poster works made for himself and friends; whilst the third part reveals the artists political side in Posters for Peace. The final section of the exhibition highlights other important works on paper made during this period of Picasso’s artistic life. Joni Clifford continues: “In today’s digital age, the poster as a tool of mass communication seems less relevant than it perhaps once did. However, what these works provide is a unique insight into the working practices of a modern great.
