PINK HIJAB DAY raised R5000: VOCs Pink Hijab Day initiative at Masjidul-Quds on Tuesday raised an impressive R5,000 simply from donations given by women who attended the event. These proceeds will be handed over to CANSA and Pink Drive, as a small token of support for the work they do for breast cancer patients. More than 900 women came together at Masjidul Quds for the annual global initiative, aimed at bringing awareness to breast cancer. Through donning the pink hijab and spreading the message of the importance of understanding the disease, a number of women have been motivated to live healthier lives. The organising team have hailed the event a success and hope to improvement on the concept next year. “We had such an amazing time. The donations that came in even after the event and the constant messages we received from listeners throughout the day really contributed to the success of the event,” said Mishka Daries, VOCs programme manager. The outside broadcast at the event sparked the interest from many other organisations, wanting to find out where they can get breast screening and how to go about organising an event of this nature within their communities.“Out of all the five years of hosting such an event, this has been the best one yet for VOC. It seems it only gets better. We are proud to be a part of this radio station as we have seen what an impact an intiative of this kind has had on the members of our local communities,” Daries added. With the negative stigma and somewhat misinterpreted messages of Islam and Muslims in main stream media, the event did not only call for a global stand on the awareness of breast cancer but also highlighting the beauty of the Muslimah attire. This was reflected in the themes of the shows on air such as Morning Expresso and Afternoon Cruise. From the outset, the team hoped to get Pink Hijab Day trending on social networks. By Tuesday afternoon, Twitter and Facebook were abuzz with people from all over Cape Town using the platforms to share their stories and pictures of them donning the pink head scarf and participating in Pink Hijab Day activities. VOCs own Pink Hijab Day competition - which called for photos of women dressed in pink - was a hit amongst listeners who sent their pictures via email. Shiehaam was the winner of the first prize which is a ticket to the much anticipated Maher Zain concert in December. Sanieyah Abrahams, Salamah Adams and Faghmie Adams were all winners of the gatsby and snoek parcel with the new Friddies restaurant. The winners were part of a draw live on Afternoon Cruise where the VOC team spoke about the great support from the community to make this Octobers theme of breast cancer awareness, the forefront of the agenda. While many donated money, there were others who showed their support by donating cake for the cake sales which, along with the sale of pink ribbons, contributed to the money raised. Wed like to thank each and everyone who played an integral role in putting the Pink Hijab Day on the calendar and assisting in bringing about the much needed awareness on breast cancer, concluded Daries.
