PITTSBURGH, PA – The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police K9 Beny has been awarded a ballistic vest from the nationwide nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and an anonymous local resident. The animal loving sponsor made a donation of $950 to the nonprofit after K9 Rocco was killed in the line of duty last January. Funds were earmarked to cover the cost of the vest for Officer Philip Lerza’s new K9 partner, Beny a 23-month-old Belgian Malinois/German Shepard mix from Slovakia. In March 2014, Vested Interest in K9s co-hosted a nationwide campaign with Groupon Grassroots to outfit police K9s with bullet and stab protective vests in memory of K9 Rocco of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. More than $335,000 was raised, which will provide at least 350 law enforcement dogs nationwide with the protective body armor. All vests will be embroidered with the words: “In Memory of K9 Rocco, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police will have a media event once it is in possession of the new vest.
