PK - I saw this film few days ago. But restrained myself from writing about it, bocz it is scary these days to voice an opinion. Raju Hirani has been one of my most favorites... bcoz of the Munnabhai series. But something did go a lil wrong with the Aamir series. This opinion is subjective... bcoz business wise - it is the opposite. Things seems to have gone absolutely perfect at the box office for both PK n 3 Idiots when compared to Munna series. Reaffirming the fact that a brand always wins over the content. Talking about PK is quite difficult. As a filmmaker, a writer, I am actually confused. Bcoz its not a good script - not a great screenplay, BUT it works with the audience today. Sooooooo may be they knew what works with the audience and then deliberately wrote it that way. Hence they are not dumb... they are definitely super smart. They have done exactly what the Ticket buying audience want. There is not attempt at making a great cinema... and they never tried to be one either. Munnabhai was never preachy or over smart, but both PK and 3idiots have that element strongly. In munna, Hero was innocent, hed go through a problem and in the process of resolving it, hed end up discovering new things which were all WOW to us. But at the end of the day they were simply a solution to his problems. But in the last two films, the protagonist is PERFECT. His problems are situational and not in the character itself. He needs to be surrounded by dumb people to look smart. In Munna series, boman was a very strong character. When he challenges Munna... it is REAL. But in PK n 3 Idiots, they were weak and acting stupid. We all have been through college.... did we ever have a dean like that? He could be stupid but he would never come across like he is is one. But there is no point reviewing bcoz it is clearly done to win the crowd. And what one has to do to win the crowd changes with time. The crowd in college which paid for 3 idiots is now working somewhere. So the crowd which is paying for PK today likes it. From a purely business POV, they got it RIGHT. They used the brand Aamir and said things through the film. It doesnt matter if the emotions are cheesy and over the top... bcoz that is what the 300Cr club audience want. But this is the reality and it is scary. More and more audience subscribing to movies which play on their favorite brand, and with content that they like, this is not the right direction to go. Cinema as a form of expression, a medium to ask questions etc will just disappear. Having said that, PK still tries to get the audience to think, ask questions etc... its just that we are not that audience. Their target audience is a different category all together. It is our fault that we have seen so many films which are dealt with lot of sensitivity and precision story telling. So to many of us PK may seem cheesy... and we dont belong to that 300cr club. And we have no right to make fun of those who belong to that club either. I just wish the Superman/flawless characterization of the protagonist changes in Rajus next. Just for fun - Aamir: Raju, I want to play a character which has no flaws. Raju: Aamir..... but no man is perfect. Aamir: Hmmmmm... you are right.... Make me an alien!! :P
