PK (2014) [Hindi] Rating - 8/10 Dear religious fanatics, illiberal believers, demigod worshippers and intolerant conservatives : Brace yourselves before getting into watch PK, as those two and a half hours of social satire might turn out to be way too rational for you to deal with and may urge you to raise your eyebrows owing to its logic for the majority of its running time. Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijit Joshi, the director-scenarist duo who gave us gems like Munnabhai series and 3 Idiots are back, yet again, with a pounding bang, this time with a smartly made skylarking entertainer with impertinent sarcasm stamped all over to question our belief system and ultimately to stay away from all those money embezzling, fraudulent, fallacious stupids who establish themselves to be the mediators of God, the so called demigods who banks on believers blind faith and inordinate fear. The effort Aamir has invested into making its ludicrous yet genuine, simple yet profound character authentic as far as possible, is yet another proud golden feather in his cap. Anyone who wants to experience it with absolutely no spoilers at all, please stop reading any further! SPOILER ALERT --------------------- PK (Aamir Khan), an absurd yet unfeigned alien who lands in the deserts of Rajasthan and gets stranded on Earth when he loses an amulet, the medium to communicate with his spaceship over to a thief. In the midst of trying different ways to find his lost amulet, he learns the local language with the help of his mind reading capabilities. He then starts another pursuit, in search of God without any preconceived notions when everyone who he turns up for help, refers to God as the only person who will be knowing where his amulet is. Jaggu aka Jagat Janani (Anushka Sharma) is an aspiring journalist from a conservative family, who is doing a course in TV production in Belgium. She falls in love with a Pakistani boy who walks out on her on the day they decided to get married. Heartbroken, she comes back to India and eventually joins a TV channel which sells themselves for TRPs like most of them. Coincidentally, she meets PK, follows him out of sheer curiosity, his queer charm, unconventional solutions to problem and gradually gets convinced of his plight and she decides to help him recover his amulet, only with which he can call back his spaceship to go back to his planet. But the amulet has ended up in the hands of a demigod who claims it to be a gift dropped by God on earth. How PK and Jaggu together outwit the demigods fraudulence by questioning our system of belief and the order of things prevailing in our society with the help of media, forms the crux. Even though Hirani and Joshi werent able to surpass the standards set themselves through Munnabhai series and 3 Idiots, PK still manages to be one of the most wildly entertaining film of the year that decorates a wide grin onto your face throughout its running time, which doesnt leave you for some time even after getting out of the screen. One of the main topics it focusses, has already been discussed in another well-made entertainer which has a tighter narrative, Oh My God, two years ago, about the backwashes of the frauds who pass themselves to be the mediators of God. But Hirani and Joshi still manage to stuff in much more relevant things into its outrageous narrative. The way it questions our belief system, the natural order of things thats been prevailing in our society and ironic contradictions of humanity, all looked up from the eyes of an alien was something refreshingly fresh and innovative. The whole alien concept in the movie has been dealt with utmost care with the reasoning that doesnt sound atrocious and loved the way it illustrates the alien learning the local language unlike most of the aliens portrayed in most of the science fiction movies churned out from Hollywood speaking chaste English on its own without any grooming. Even though the idea wasnt novel, the way it chooses to strip down the likes of those imbecilic people who resort to deceitful demigods to solve their problems was another masterstroke. The genius of Hirani and Joshi lies in the manner in which they executed such a sensitive plot with topics that could land them up in controversies, with such delicateness and maturity. The point where the screenplay turns out be a bit clumsy is towards the penultimate moment when the focus suddenly shifts way too much over to a silly romance with a far fetched twist. Still, it had a cracker of an ending scene with a surprise cameo in store for you. The cinematography was beautiful. Editing was brilliant in the former half, but falters slightly in its latter hour. Music and re-recording goes in synch with its narrative without disturbing the pace. More than Hirani and Joshi, the biggest reason for which you should watch is none other than the perfectionist, Mr. Aamir Khan. All his sins for doing Dhoom 3 has been pardoned with PK, where he portrays a swashbuckling, idiosyncratic lunatic who looks upon the world in a different way with farthermost panache without reducing the queer character to just a mere caricature. The fact that he underwent two years of training to make his Bhojpuri accent authentic it shows the kind of unflinching effort and dedication hes put in to being a PK, which ultimately pays off big time into being one of his best portrayals of his entire career. And its his prowess that holds the movie together, even when the screenplay turns gawky. Anushka Sharma as Jaggu, was graceful and charming. Boman Irani and Sanjay Dutt too comes out with honest performances. On the whole, barring its minor flaws in the screenplay and heavy cinematic liberties in the latter hour towards the end, Rajkumar Hirani delivers yet another hilarious feel-good entertainer where ET meets Oh My God with relevant social rantings on humanity in an outrageous manner. Do watch it for Aamir, who is back to his stellar form after a forgettable Dhoom 3.
