PLACE believes that almost every development should be mixed use, an ecosystem of living, working, playing, learning and creating. Monocultures like housing, industrial parks, shopping centers, are unhealthy. New research suggests were on the right track. Economic development occurs through networks of proximity, casual encounters, and spin offs. The prosperity of places like New York and San Francisco is about the dynamic interaction between networks of individuals who exchange ideas and opportunities. Many of these interactions are casual, and occur in networks of public and semi-public spaces—an urban web of sidewalks, plazas, and cafes. Electronic connections, as it turns out, do not replace this primary network of spatial, personal exchange. There are many barriers to developing places like this. Lenders wont lend money to project like this. Builders tend to be experts in commercial, but not residential. Designers have to find ways to facilitate the positive interactions and diminish the negative ones. PLACE will keep finding ways to build visionary places like this around the world that transform communities. Thanks for your support.
