PLACE is a nonpartisan organization. And we dont believe that our environment — clean air, water, food — should be a partisan issue. Who doesnt want that? Good people may disagree about what to do about the problem, but whether or not we have a problem should not be in dispute. And whether we waste our natural resources and leave a degraded planet for future generations is something we all need to care about. Somehow, the environment has become a partisan issue. We dug up an old article from former Minneapolis Meteorologist, Paul Douglass, who was an outspoken Republican, who wanted, as a scientist, to advocate for his party to admit out loud that climate change is real and dangerous. Theres a whole new atmosphere overhead, that hasnt been this way since before there were humans. He quotes Dr. Jeff Masters, who famously said, This is not the atmosphere I grew up with. Weve been lucky at PLACE. Because our places solve multiple challenges facing communities — affordable housing, transit, health care, education, arts and culture and homelessness — we get support from both sides of the political aisle. And weve been able to build places that use vastly less energy than their counterparts. And everybody is for eliminating waste. We take a small one-time investment and produce multiple social goods. And everybody is for leveraging our investments. We stand above conservative or liberal. Mr. Douglass points out that acknowledging that the planet is warming doesnt make you a liberal. He quotes ancient words of wisdom: We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors...we borrow it from our children. Its a good read.
