During the past year the Ministry of Education has been taking a new look at these bursaries. From 2014, Boarding Allowances will replace these boarding bursaries and the Māpihi Pounamu Financial Support Scheme. However, correspondence school remains a viable option for many families and maintains its excellent reputation. From 2014 there will be two types of Boarding Allowances, based on: Geographical isolation barriers, for those where the main barrier is distance to a school; and Significant barriers, for those students who have other issues that prevent them from participating meaningfully in their local school.
