PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS....IF THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOUR CHILDREN (ESPECIALLY YOUR 4, 5, AND 6 YR OLD) GO TO....... CHOOSE TO REFUSE COMMON CORE. Anonymous post Something has not feel right. I am not an educator but I am educated and as a parent I see something amiss with my kids-more so my kindergartener. The classroom lacks visual stimulation. There are no cozy areas for them to sit and “read”. Art consists of a drawer of crayons and some paints. Play kitchens and building blocks are gone. Maybe I was just holding on to my childhood and hoping that my kids would have the same explorative, social experience that I did. But then the homework started. Two pages, some nights 3-4 pages. Then came the assessments. But wait, before the “practice test” came home I received a note that my child was struggling to recognize a few numbers. I assured the teacher we would work on it. Apparently, the curriculum is at such a quick pace that we skipped over learning 1-20 and went right to math! We’ve started sight words which is fine. As long as my child is ENJOYING learning to read at five I am okay with that. A few days before the holidays a homework assignment came home where she was expected to recognize the adjective in a sentence and then create a sentence using one noun and two adjectives! The report cards are scored 1-4. Sorry, but my five year old is not a number. She is not a 1-4 or even a letter grade. I don’t pay out of pocket for some prestigious academy where I expect her to be molded into a little honor student. This is public school! My concern is if she is socializing, playing, interacting. Give me a report on that! I dont need to see one full page of her ELA and Math skills and one tiny paragraph of “Learning Behavior”. I remember the pediatrician telling me, “Don’t worry. She’s not going to be fifteen and still crawling and wearing diapers. She’ll learn.” Well, I feel that same way about reading and math. She’ll learn. I am confident she will learn those skills. But if we don’t allow them to be their age and develop in other ways, what are we setting them up for? Why are we shoving this down their throats? What is the rush for them to grow up so quick? Someone please tell me the purpose? Should we have them in business suits with little brief cases for their 6 hour “job” everyday? This year has been a horrible experience for both my daughter and my husband and I. Sending her off everyday in tears fearful she has to take a test. The anxiety on a Friday night of how many more days until she has to go back. We are living through this. Her teacher is not at fault. She is doing everything she can and goes above and beyond for my daughter. I had asked for a meeting with the principal. When I walked the halls to the meeting it was then that I finally realized what kindergarten has become. Of course I have seen through the work how it has changed, but it wasn’t until that moment in the hallway that I knew education is not about a whole holistic learning experience. It is now about testing and test prep. And it starts in kindergarten because the ENTIRE kindergarten floor was SILENT!!! Not a sound of laughter, singing or chatter. What are they doing inside those classrooms with four, five and six year olds that doesn’t involve noise? Test prep and behavior prep. This is what kindergarten has become.
