PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - Do not misunderstand or misinterpret this post... Historical events, like all other events are interpreted subjectively - by individuals but also by nations; such is the complexity of human life and history. Tomorrow is the 11th November - Armistice Day for the English, the French ... Independence Day for us Poles. After more than 120 years of non-existence in the political domain, partitioned between Prussia ( later Germany, after unification of the latter) , Russia and Austria-Hungary, after years of oppression ( less so in the Austro-Hungarian parts of former Poland ) during which Prussia/German and Russia tried to wipe out all trace of the Polish spirit, of national identity, Poland ( having survived thanks to our literature, our writers and poets, to the Catholic Church, to the spirit of the insurrections of November 1830 and January 1863, to a deep sense of national identity in Polish hearts ), Poland was reborn as an independent state ... and it only lasted until 1939!
