PLEASE READ AND ACT NOW TO SAVE PENKRIDGE LIBRARY The proposal - TopicsExpress

PLEASE READ AND ACT NOW TO SAVE PENKRIDGE LIBRARY The proposal is currently out to consultation, the county council is trying to save £1.2million (all dressed up in promised to make it more connected and meet our needs better). The final decision will be made after hearing our responses, deadling is early October. All libraries in Staffordshire have been classified as Library Extra, Core or Local. The Extras will be Tamworth, Burton, Newcastle and Lichfield. Our local Cores would be Cannock, Stafford, Perton & Codsall. Penridge is proposed to be a Library Local. In summary - Penkridge will no longer be run/funded by the County Council (Saving less than £40k). It seems that they want it to be run by local volunteers, or to become a mobile service - but they are open to our suggestions as to what we need. At a recent Q&A session the County Council panel was asked what happens if no one comes forward to run it - and eventually they responded to the effect if no one cares enough about it to run it themselves then it will close. PLEASE fill out the questionnaire and tell them that we care about our library! That our community has as much need as Codsall and Perton for a Library Core. It seems that a while ago Penkridge was refused funding to get a larger library (I think I remember rumours about the old Doctors surgery) and now it seems that having a smaller building (less opportunity for expansion) is being counted against us in the appraisal. There is a consultation in the Library next Tuesday afternoon (see poster for details) and you can read the documents and fill out a response here. staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/librariesnew/Help-shape-library-service/Help-shape-library-service.aspx
