PLEASE READ AND SHARE... Our shelter is over capacity. We are filled with strays from throughout the area. Why are there so many strays? It is not because dogs have gotten out by accident or escaped through the open gate in their yard. These dogs have been dumped. They were, most likely, purchased from a pet store or a backyard breeder as a puppy. That cute, adorable, spur of the moment bundle of joy grew to be bigger, more expensive and more time consuming than the person ever imagined. They had no idea how much hair would be shed, how much they would spend in pet food and vet bills and how much property could be destroyed if that puppy didn’t receive proper exercise and interaction. The stray may have been dumped by a breeder. Either the mother of several litters is no longer able to be bred and is of no use… out she goes. Perhaps it was puppies that, after months and months of trying, they couldn’t sell. Out they go. Who is to blame? #1 The breeder for perpetuating the problem by breeding their dog and selling the pups for top dollar without giving a thought to the home that pup would be going to. Backyard breeders and pet stores don’t require references, vet checks or spaying/neutering of the pup (to STOP the vicious cycle). But it is not the breeders alone who are at fault. #2 The person who buys the dog is also part of the problem. Making that purchase allows the breeder to breed again (that poor mother!!!), and again and again. We hear over and over “ I HAD to buy the puppy to save it from a horrible situation”. Assuming you spayed or neutered that pup and gave it a forever home, you did save that pup. However, you enabled that breeder to have several more litters of your pup’s siblings and each of those pups face a terrible fate. Of course there are other situations in which dogs become strays; the owners are forced to move on short notice and can’t take the dog. They may leave the dog in the house or apartment hoping that the next owner/tenant will take care of it. Perhaps the owner died and no family member could take it. That animal may find itself out on the street. What it boils down to is this. PLEASE…. Discourage your friends or family members from breeding or buying from a breeder. Advise the MCSPCA of individuals who continue to breed their dogs. If you are considering getting a dog, please be realistic about the time you have to spend with them and find the dog that fits your life. There are always amazing dogs at the shelter! Most of them know (or are learning) basic manners and commands. If they aren’t “potty trained”, they are getting there. There are also dozens of breed specific rescues in the area! If you find that you don’t have time for a dog, come volunteer at the shelter and spend time with our loving dogs!! Just five minutes with Haze will convince you that our dogs our outstanding!!!
