PLEASE SHARE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY IRISH RED CROSS (MALIN HEAD) The Cardiac First Response (CFR) unit has been active in the Malin Head area over the past three years. “We are temporarily coming off call” as from the 6th September 2013 due to lack of volunteers from the community. Recently our numbers of trained CFR’s (Cardiac First Responders) have declined as there has been no interest from the community since we appealed for more member/volunteers for this LIFE SAVING SERVICE. We recently held a demonstration at the Annual Malin Head sports day on the 15th of August to create the awareness & importance of having a CFR group in Malin Head. This service has been linked to the Ambulance Control office, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. In the event off a cardiac arrest in the locality, Ambulance Control would activate our team to assist before the ambulance service may arrive, as we are 15 miles from the nearest ambulance base and GP. This temporary decision was taken by the team in recent weeks. The branch has 15 members, however at present there are only 5 members available to provide the “on call service” seven nights per week, 365 days per year. The Branch have set up 2 AED’s (Automated External Defibrillation) in the Malin Head area, situated at the Star of the Sea church and another placed at the entrance of Urblereagh National School. If anyone has participated in AED training or are trained in the medical field, the AED’s are available at these points for your use in an emergency. We, the branch, hope that in the next few weeks we will receive a positive response from the community and get more people involved in the CFR training, so that we can re-activate this LIFE SAVING SERVICE as soon as possible. If you are interested in becoming a Cardiac First Responder for your community, or would like to learn this life saving skill, Please contact one of the following instructors: Martina Quirke, Teresa O’Hagan or Catriona Gallagher
