LEMS is a rare autoimmune disorder with the primary symptoms of muscle weakness. LEMS occurs when the immune system attacks the nerves that control the muscles. People with LEMS typically experience fatigue, muscle pain, and stiffness. The weakness generally occurs first in the lower extremity muscles, particularly the legs and hips. Other symptoms include weakness in the arms and shoulders, drooping of the eyelids, facial weakness, and difficulty swallowing.
