PLEASE SHARE! HIGH PLAINS SNOW GOOSE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES KEYNOTE ENTERTAINER! LAMAR, Colorado (December 15, 2014) - The Lamar Chamber of Commerce, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Kiowa County Economic Development and Canyons and Plains are excited to host Jim Pfitzer as the speaker, entertainer and guide for the 13th Annual High Plains Snow Goose & Heritage History Festival that will be held February 20-22, 2015 in Lamar, Colorado. Jim Pfitzer is best known for his nature-based personal tales ranging from too-close-for-comfort black bear encounters, to the significance of sweet tea in southern society. His work has been called avant-garde and old-fashioned at the same time. His latest work, Aldo Leopold - A Standard of Change astandardofchange, takes Jim out of his usual role as storyteller, casting him for the first time as playwright and actor. A Standard of Change explores the influences and challenges that led Aldo Leopold to penning some of the most important essays in his book, A Sand County Almanac. The three-day festival offers a variety of programs, field trips, and seminars that celebrate birding, watchable wildlife and historical heritage in Southeastern Colorado. Tour Two Buttes Reservoir, John Martin Reservoir, and Picture and Carrizo Canyons, south of Lamar. You can even have breakfast with the Raptors! This festival is an opportunity for the folks who live in Southeast Colorado to be a tourist in their own community! We love to show off our region, but its not only for the visitors, Pat Palmer, History Buff and Coordinator of the event, said. In addition to bird watching, people can tour beautiful historical sites, sample authentic Dutch Oven cooking, listen to the magnificent native American flute and guitar music of Lex Nichols and take a wagon ride, Palmer added. Participants can watch approximately 30,000 geese take off from local reservoirs and fly to their feeding grounds. Flocks numbering in the tens of thousands make for an impressive sight. Hundreds of bird species migrate through Southeastern Colorado each year, but the migration of snow geese is by far the most dramatic. Event registration is free, however field trips range from $10 to $50, depending on the length of the program and if meals are provided. Numerous programs are also offered at no charge.
