PLEASE SHARE SHARE SHARE On Monday evening I posted about the Mayo County Council monthly meeting that had some errors. I hope to clear those up here. Firstly, Councilor Lisa Chambers (FF) did make an amendment to the motion on the abolishment of Irish Water but not the one I said she made. Lisa Chambers amendment called for the Constitutional Convention to look into changing the Constitution to ensure water will always remain in the hands of the people and never be privitised. That is a good amendment that most people would support. I also said that Lisa Chambers was a solicitor when in fact she is a barrister. My apologies to Councilor Lisa Chambers for that. The amendment that caused all the problems was in fact proposed by Al McDonnell (FF) back in November. Mr McDonnells amendment was for the control of water services to be given back to Mayo County Council and that charges be suspended until all the people of Mayo have a proper working service. This amendment does not call for the abolishment of Irish Water and proposes charges down the line, something I and many other people would never support. Just how this proposed amendment ended up being a motion that replaced the existing motion is still a matter of great concern as in order for a motion to be considered it must be given in writing at least 10 days before hand, something Al McDonnells motion did not have. The confusion began when Al McDonnell left the chamber before the water debate began and Lisa Chambers read out his amendment. Although Miss Chambers did say it was Al McDonnells amendment that was lost on most people as she did read both at the same time. The chair of the meeting never made it clear that it wasnt Lisa Chambers amendment. In any event, Al McDonnells new motion was defeated and rightly so. Mayo County Council have still failed to abolish Irish Water, something 18 other Councils up and down the country have already done. There is shame in that fact. I hope that clears it up. I apologise for my mistakes in the earlier post. People make mistakes sometimes.
