PLEASE SHARE What If? There are so many friends of mine that are facing their first Christmas without a loved one. My heart goes out to you. And I know there are many more that I do not know and even hundreds more that find themselves still grieving at this time of year. Years after a loss like that. To all of you I am sorry. And I find myself as I think of you wondering if there might be some way to help you if not get through your suffering. To at least ease your pain while in it. I believe that most of us feel it is their death that we have the most trouble grasping. When in reality many times the very absence of them in some way forces us to accept their death. Their laughter and their smile that we miss so dearly. In some cases its those things that used to aggravate us that we remember and even miss them. The wet towel after showering left laying on your side of the bed. The lights left on. Or the kitchen cabinet doors left swinging open each time they even pass through. All seem like reminders that they are gone. But I wonder and I present to you that possibility its not their death that you struggle with. But its the resistance to embracing that there is life beyond what we know as living human beings. For what if you considered the fact that they have not died? That they simply crossed over to another existence? Where they are well and no longer suffering the frailties of a human body? And what if by just embracing that as fact while not completely erasing your pain from missing them. Would it not at least bring some measure of comfort to your grieving heart? I certainly would hope so. So I would like to ever so gently and in love challenge you as much as you are able. To just try this Christmas to reach out in faith believing that though they are gone from you in physical form that they are with you in spirit. Know that each and every memory you share of them is what keeps them alive and well in you and through you. Picture not the empty chair you see but picture them sitting where they always sat looking like they always looked. Only better. And whole. And may you be encouraged by your own efforts and may you find your way to a very Merry Christmas. Edwin C Hofert
