A video that has surfaced in the media reveals how cats are forced to race on the streets as part of a backstreet sport that is gaining popularity in the town of La Marina, near Tulua, Colombia. Cats are dragged by their necks to the starting line. A balloon then bursts in their faces in order to mark the start of the race. Yobs then bang dustbin lids and chase them down a narrow road in front of a cheering crowd. The idea is that once the balloon has burst, the cats will race each other to the end of the street. They are so stunned that they will run anywhere just to escape. However, the ropes around their necks are tied to the legs of the people that race them, so there is no chance they can escape. The heartless competitors bang on dustbin lids and chase after the cats, steering them on the right track. The footage was seen by animal rights groups Huella Animal and AnimaNaturalis. It has also emerged that the mayor of Tulua, German Gomez, was made aware of this trending sport, however he chose to do nothing about it.
