PLEASE help me propagate this... For the past two months, Ive had to deliver some VERY bad news to WAY too many people due to Cryptowall. This makes my blood boil for two reasons: First, it ruins peoples data. Second, it uses very good technological concepts in very bad ways. If a persons first encounter with encryption or bitcoin is associated with a foreign lowlife holding their data ransom, they will see these things as bad, not good...but I digress. Friends, if you get hit with Cryptowall, your data is gone. You are screwed. Unless you have a backup (and no, Dropbox does NOT count), your data will be plain gone. If youre already a victim, its too late. If youre not, there are two things you can use. First: ESET Smart Security. I cant explicitly speak for any others, but I know firsthand that their firewall was the only one I found that prevented outbound traffic of the Poweliks infection that typically downloads the Cryptowall payload. If you dont have a virus scanner on your computer right now, I *STRONGLY* recommend this one. eset/us/home/products/smart-security/ Second: CryptoPrevent. The free version requires manual maintenance, but for $15/year for automatic and silent updates, its also very helpful in preventing Cryptowall from making a mess of your data. https://foolishit/vb6-projects/cryptoprevent/
