PLEASE remember that driving is a HUGE responsibility and privilege. We are all distracted and in a hurry this time of year, but please be mindful that we owe it to each other to be safe. Driving is actually one of the biggest social responsibilities we owe each other! In no other aspect of daily life does our attention and patience literally mean the difference between life and death! We are controlling tons of metal and explosive fuel hurtling through space and time. It is so easy to lose sight of the fact that speeding and aggressive driving rarely (if ever) gets us to our destination more than a few seconds faster. So really?! Is it worth risking permanent and disfiguring injuries to save a few seconds? In representing people injured by the negligence of others, I have seen some truly heartbreaking situations. These soft bags of meat we call bodies can suffer injuries from changes in velocity of about 7mph. Not every wreck results in injuries, and the biomechanics of why some people are injured (or killed) often comes down to fate (and some physics beyond the scope of this post). One thing is clear, however. Almost all car wrecks can be avoided by common courtesy, patience and obeying the rules of the road. thestate/2013/12/16/3162253/sc-drivers-ranked-second-worst.html
