PM BACK HOME FROM UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY Kathmandu, Oct 2, 2014: Prime Minister Sushil Koirala returned home this afternoon after participating in the 69th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York of the USA. He was welcomed by Constituent Assembly (CA) chairman Subas Chandra Nembang, the Deputy Prime Minister duo Bamdev Gautam and Prakash Man Singh, ministers, the Chief Secretary, the chiefs of the security bodies and the special class employees of the Government of Nepal at the VVIP lounge of the Tribhuvan International Airport. A contingent of the Nepalese Army offered a guard of honour on the occasion. The Prime Minister had left for New York on September 19, leading a 22-member Nepali delegation to the UNGA. He had addressed the UNGA on September 26, expressing Nepals commitment to the UN Charter, the fight against terrorism and keeping world peace. The Prime Minister also stressed in his statement to the UNGA on making special provisions of providing financial assistance for addressing the problems of countries like Nepal that, despite releasing only nominal amount of the so-called greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, have to bear the brunt of its adverse impact. Talking to journalists at the VVIP lounge of the airport, Prime Minister Koirala said that in his address to the UNGA he called on the international community to extend support to the least developed countries like Nepal in attaining their goals and for the prompt, complete and effective implementation of the plans of actions agreed in the past to address the common problems of these countries. Nepal has set the target of upgrading itself to the status of developing country from that of a Least Developed Country by 2022. PM Koirala, on September 23, addressed the UN conference on climate change organised by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. In his address to the conference, he drew the attention of the world community towards the adverse effects of climate change on mountain countries as Nepal, the policies and programmes the government has adopted for minimizing these impacts, and the financial and technical support expected of the international community to that end. Likewise, participating in the inaugural session of the Security Council Summit presided over by the US President Barack Obama, Prime Minister Koirala drew attention to the dangers engendered by terrorism seen in different places of the world and pledged Nepals support to the steps taken by the international community towards fighting terrorism. Premier Koirala said that during his separate meetings with the UN Secretary-General Ban, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, Bangladesh Prime Minister Shekh Hasina Wajed and the Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif he held talks on important issues of bilateral interests as well as on the constitution writing nd the peace process of Nepal. Similarly, PM Koirala, en route to New York, held a special interaction with the chiefs of Nepali diplomatic missions in the west Asia and middle-east at Abu Dhabi (UAE) about problems being faced by Nepali community and workers, problems seen in the distribution of Machine Readable Passport ( MRP), shortage of human resources at the missions and their condition. On the occasion, PM Koirala directed the heads of missions to take an effective measure to address the workers problems. Likewise, the PM met with the Nepali community at the New York. In course of his visit to home, he held special discussions with the Nepali ambassadors and missions chiefs in different embassies in Europe and Israel about countrys ongoing peace process, constitution-making and other vivid aspects. On the occasion, the ambassadors and missions chiefs were urged to make efforts for getting continuous support and cooperation from the international community in socio- economic development endevours in the country. During his stay in Europe, the PM had a bilateral meeting with the European Council President, European Commission President and the Prime Minister of Luxembourg. During his stay in the NY, the PM underwent his medical checkup Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital. Responding to a query of journalists at TIA, the PM expressed his hope that Nepal would witness the promulgation of a federal democratic constitution on upcoming January 22 on the basis of political consensus. The Constituent Assembly has gone through important discussions regarding the constitution-making, CA committees are busy in discussions and the political parties are effortful for forging a consensus on the key contentious issues in the constitution-drafting. Thats why the constitution will be issued in consensus and thereafter the nation will head towards countrys economic progress and prosperity. The nation will see a drastic change in the next ten years, he stated. The PM was accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahendra Bahadur Pandey, his advisor Dr Dinesh Bhattarai, PMs personal secretary Basanta Kumar Gautam, Acting Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi, PMs honorary public relations advisor Mridula Koirala, Joint-Secretary at the Foreign Ministry Deepak Dhital, Chief of Protocol Kali Prasad Pokhrel, Ministry Ministers public relations advisor Ashwin Kumar Pudasaini.
