PM Welcomes Housing Initiative In Sugar Dependent Communities Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has welcomed the housing developments now underway in sugar dependent communities, being funded by the European Union. According to Simpson Miller it is a welcome form of reparation for sweat and tears of Jamaica’s ancestors. The Prime Minister was delivering the keynote address on the final day of the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show in May Pen, Clarendon. With funding from the European Union, the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries, through the Sugar Transformation Unit, is implementing several projects to resuscitate sugar dependent areas. Infrastructure work is taking place on eight sites, with housing construction at various stages of completion on four sites. Today, the prime minister also commended Mike Henry, the Central Clarendon Member of Parliament for his unswerving commitment to get financial compensation for slavery in Jamaica.
