PM confident on year ahead Henry Puna Despite the volatile current political situation, Prime Minister Henry Puna says he is confident about his position and his ability to remain the country’s leader for the year ahead. CINews has attempted to obtain an interview with Puna numerous times recently, without success. However, the PM’s advisor, Trevor Pitt, says Puna will confirm a date for a meeting with a reporter once there are ‘substantive’ matters to discuss. “No date has been set yet for the first formal cabinet of 2015. Submissions on policy decisions are still being worked on for Cabinet consideration,” says Pitt. “Once there are sufficient or substantive papers, the Prime Minister will confirm a meeting date.” So far this year, the PM has been consulting with his colleagues on ‘other matters’, he says. As for Puna’s travel plans for this year, Pitt will only say that the PM has standard obligations and responsibilities to take care of every year. “Since this is a celebratory year of some significance, the PM will no doubt take into account those travel commitments as they are scheduled,” he says. “For instance, we are hosting two regional meetings this year and that schedule is still being worked on.” “The PM is confident about his position and leadership. The present coalition talk is part and parcel of Cook Islands politics.” And most of the speculation about the Prime Minister’s current situation is mostly driven by emotion and not by fact, Pitt says. “Commentators can speculate all they like. Your letters page is rife with writers who have far too much time on their hands.” Category: #maoridb-Local Media, News Published: January 08, 2015 at 10:54AM #maoridb-news
