PM visits residents Siteri Sauvakacolo Friday, March 14, 2014 FOR 32 years, residents of Vunimoli Settlement have been knocking on governments door to consider land tenureship for residential leases. And a sigh of relief was brought to these 42 households outside Suva as they were visited by the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday. Vunimoli is an informal settlement and has been occupied since 1982 near the Lovonilase Cemetery in Suva. Yesterday, a village elder asked the Prime Minister for assistance on the formalisation of the land they were staying on or if other formal alternatives could be considered. The village elder said their understanding was that the land belonged to the government and only the government had the full authority and formal utilisation of the land. However, Lands Ministry permanent secretary, Tevita Boseiwaqa said major plans were in place for the area and that a government road was expected to be constructed from there to Princes Rd. He added that according to the Rivers/Streams Act, all houses beside rivers should be six metres away from the river bank to allow the public to enjoy for recreational purposes. The Prime Minister said the only option would be for the residents to relocate, however details would be revealed to the settlers later.
