PNG ASSUMES CHAIR OF COMPETITION POLICY AND LAW GROUP IN APEC PROCESS Dr Billy Manoka, CEO and Commissioner of ICCC this week assumed the chair of the Friends of the Chair (FoTC) of the APEC Economic Committees’ experts group on Competition Policy and Law Group (CPLG), during the 3rd APEC Senior Officials meeting which is currently in session in Beijing, China. The appointment became official during the announcement made by Dr Rory McLeod of New Zealand, Chair of the Economic Committee as the first order business in 17 August 2014. Dr Manoka becomes the second Papua New Guinean within the space of the last 12 months to chair an APEC Committee or subcommittee. In February this year, Mr Clarence Hoot was appointed to the co-chair of the APEC Investment Experts Group. As chair of the FoTC in CPLG, Dr Manoka will lead in-depth discussions on the promotion and understanding of regional competition laws and policies to examine the impact on trade and investment flows, and identify areas of technical cooperation and capacity building among member economies under the CPLG. In addition to structural and regulatory obstacles that inhibit cross-border and behind-the-border barriers to trade and investment liberalization within the APEC Economies. Apart from this progress, whilst PNG gears up to host APEC in 2018 as part of its warm up process will be hosting the 48th APEC Energy Working group in November this year and hosting the Policy Partnership on Women in the Economy (PPWE), and the High level meeting on Human Capacity Building in May 2015. An APEC year runs for 10-11 months, and will require hosting the four (4) mandatory Senior Officials Meetings, the Trade Ministers Meeting (MRT), the APEC Ministers Meeting (AMM), and the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting (AELM) together with the organizing and hosting of the annual committee, high level policy dialogue and sectoral working groups and other ministerial meetings which will take place during the course of the year in 2018. Hosting of APEC meetings is a mammoth gathering of delegates from a region that boasts more than 57% of world trade will bring countless benefits and continuous strong growth in the economy as PNG works towards growing its regional presence in international forums such as APEC.
