PNG: Aviation in one of the most beautiful countries Papua New Guinea or often just named PNG is a country in Oceania, on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and also consists of numerous islands. As air travel is extremely important for the country, not only for tourism, but also for the general transport system, a few small operators have been established in order to provide these services. But there are certain requirements: Of the 578 airports in the country there are only 21 paved runways. 557 landing strips are mostly extremely short and are located in the jungle, STOL-airplanes are the only way to operate. The Twin Otter can be found in nearly every fleet in PNG. Other very popular STOL-airplanes are the BN2 Islander and the Pilatus Porter. Even the captial, Port Moresby, is not connected with any of the other bigger towns in the country. A lot of new pilots is needed in the country to meet the basic requirement of general transport and commercial and freight transport.
