PNG Foreign Minister Rimbink Pato claims to have seen no evidence - TopicsExpress

PNG Foreign Minister Rimbink Pato claims to have seen no evidence of human rights abuses in West Papua during his fact finding mission to assess the political situation in West Papua. Mr Pato spent one day in the luxurious Swiss Bell Hotel in Jayapura. He was entertained by the Indonesian military and Police. He then went to Bali. The Vanuatu government pulled out of the mission because the delegation would not be allowed to meet any representatives from Papua civil society or any of the church leaders. How could the delegation possibly find out anything whatsoever about the wishes of the West Papuan people, when the whole plan was to only have lunch with the Indonesian military with tight security preventing anyone having any contact with the delegation? When asked about the human rights issue, Mr Pato said: “I have not seen the evidence. As I’ve said, we have a clear mandate and we have conducted an investigation. The report will go back to the leadership in terms of the mandate that we’ve come to exercise and our mission has been completed.” The Indonesian government is very pleased with Mr Patos attitude. thejakartapost/news/2014/01/16/melanesians-respect-ri-s-sovereignty.html
