POEM TO THE ARGUING ENVIRONMENTALISTS *** This is What the Winged Things Think this is where they live this is where the snowy heights end at last and where the last owl in that looming event hoots and flashes in the dark. So tell me your argument, give me your fight. Half the world’s beings have been lost since I was born, clams and the hearts of cats ghost the disappearing trees. Disease and oil, acid and dead loons acres of stumps, fires from the belly of the shallowest layers of our breath. We see the sprouting windmills we cross the flatlands where there were ponds and more ponds being sucked up into the flares of the wasted deep layers under the aquifer of our home. Give up your argument. What we have is speeding away from us and will be gone before we are and we will follow blind urgent and forlorn, forgotten into the hungry stars. What is my hope? that I can say this was a lion, this was the beast that best sang my heart if it is still with you, child, if it still counts terrors in your sleep as it blooms into dream you will know in the coming eons of our flight we did one thing right. * -- Bob Vance *
