POLICE & A TEAM OF SOLDIERS COORDINATED WELL TO DISPERSE LOOTERS TODAY AT ERIMA Fortunately for the owners of JMart, after losing store goods worth possibly millions of Kina to looters at JMart 4 mile on Saturday (see EMTV report), a team of soldiers reportedly coordinated well with police to help disperse looters (said to be mainly from nearby settlements at Erima) who attempted to loot JMart’s shop at Erima this morning. After looters were dispersed, soldiers were withdrawn from the scene it seems due to security concerns, possibly as a result of certain rumours which circulated on social media and among members of the public this morning at around 9.30 am after people reportedly from ‘5Mile’ allegedly planning to loot JMart reportedly congregated at ‘Erima Bridge’. It was said that the soldiers’ presence at Erima this morning ‘seemed to encourage the looters’. However, on the contrary, it seems it was thanks to the soldiers’ presence that disaster and another huge loss by JMart was quickly averted. It is anticipated that police will continue to coordinate well with soldiers to restore normalcy, despite the clash at Boroko police station on the weekend between police and soldiers. Concerned at comments made on social media, a source said earlier today that soldiers from Taurama and Goldie Barracks were not involved in the recent ‘standoff’ between police and soldiers and claimed that only a few soldiers from Murray Barracks were involved. “I’m just clearing the air because not all soldiers & policemen are bad, it’s only a few who tarnish the Dept’s good name,“ the source also said. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Well done to all the police and soldiers who coordinated well to restore peace and good order today in Port Moresby. *Pictures shared with permission
