POLICE BATON PRO-INDEPENDENCE BASQUES TRYING TO BRING THE BASQUE NATIONAL FLAG INTO THE MAIN FESTIVAL SQUARE BUT FAIL TO PREVENT THEIR COMRADES FROM FLYING IT RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE TOWN HALL. "Every year Basques try to bring the Ikurrina (Basque flag) into the main square for the start of the San Fermines festival. Every year the municipal police fight them, because the town council has forbidden it and allows only the flag of Nafarroa (the province in which Pamplona is) and of the Spanish state. "In 2010 they sneaked a giant flag in and the police charged them and tore it off them. In 2011 the video of police batoning the youth trying to bring the flag through shocked many around the world. "Last year the youth forced their way in with the flag despite police physical opposition and there had been another already sneaked in. This year the youth were beaten back by police but instead the flag was flown up high in front of the Town Hall building. The roars of approval make it clear which side the crowd is on. "But the council delayed the start by 20 minutes until local secret police managed to cut it down. The shouts of "UPeNe kanpora!" are telling the UPN ruling party to get out. UPN is a Nafarroan conservatist and regionalist party which until 2008 acted as the local voice of the Spanish Conservative Party PP."
