POLICE CELEBRATE NKOMOS LIFE When popular performer and police inspector, Kenneth Baya Nkomo, of the docudrama titled Itshireletse breathed his last on August 7, the grief on his legion of fans’ faces was obvious. And, there is no doubt that every Sunday at 730 pm, many Batswana turned to Btv to watch Itshireletse, particularly the ever funny and intriguing Nkomo. Inspector Nkomo, whose talents included acting, singing, and saxophone playing skill, among many forms of art, was celebrated by many in the entertainment industry and in his respectable job as a police officer in the Police Special Support Group (SSG). Giving a eulogy at the late actor’s memorial service in Gaborone on August 11, Assistant Commissioner of Police,Kgosietsile Bosilong said they had lost a hero and a patron. Bosilong said all was not lost because people would console themselves through his lasting art creations as he was a formidable actor. “Everywhere Nkomo went, everyone wanted to meet him, and in fact, the whole Itshireletse crew has promoted the SSG Unit,” he said, amidst hymns and songs in remembrance of the multi-talented Nkomo. Co-actor and friend, Inspector Oankgoga Coaster Oitsile said, “Nkomo was not a comedian but comedy; he was not an actor but action, and not a musician but music.” Inspector Otsile stated that Nkomo was a funny man who used his sense of humor and jokes to get out of any complicated situation. He also said that Nkomo would often light up the set of Itshireletse during shootings and would encourage them by giving those interesting tips and tactics in their acting. For his part, one of his fans, who also became a friend, Othusitswe Mosinyi alluded that he and the deceased met over a long time ago. He always saw him on TV and loved his acting ability, so he was keen to know him. “He loved people and I do not think there will ever be another Nkomo on television and he will be forever missed,” said Mosinyi. Inspector Nkomo joined the Botswana Police Service in January 1993 and was posted to SSG after completing his training. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2008. This was followed by other ranks ultimately reaching the rank of inspector which he held at the time of his passing. He was part of the Itshireletse group that was awarded the Presidential Order of Meritourious Service in September 2012. He had served in the Botswana Police Service for 21 years and 7 months. His memorial Service was a tribute to one of Botswana’s best talents and, among attendants was Gaborone Central Member of Parliament, Mr Dumelang Saleshando, Barolong’s Kgosi kgolo, Lotlamoreng II, Mr Christopher Mbulalwa Assistant Commisioner of Botswana Police, and members of Botswana Police Services, SSG, family and friends.
