POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED FOR ARSON OF CHALK SOUND STATION A 24-year-old policeman has been arrested in connection with the shocking arson early last Friday of a police station in the Turks and Caicos Islands that left a squad car and a detective’s personal vehicle burnt beyond repair. In a press statement on Sunday, police spokesman Audley Astwood confirmed that the arrest, but he did not divulge the name of the officer who he said has been placed on administrative leave. “Investigators have gathered evidence, conducted numerous interviews, and executed search warrants (and) a 24-year-old male police officer emerged as a person of interest in the course of the investigation and was subsequently arrested on Saturday, 27 September,” Astwood said. On Friday, September 26th at 1:30 a.m., the Providenciales Fire Department was called to assist police on the scene of an arson following reports of multiple fires at the Chalk Sound police station. The back door of the police station was also burnt. This is the second time in less than a week that a member of the Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force was arrested. Another male officer was arrested on suspicion of wounding a 22-year-old male who was in police custody at police headquarters on Tuesday September 23rd. That officer is presently on bail to return at a later date while investigations continue into this matter. The officer has also been placed on administrative leave.
